    Integration of feature distributions for colour texture segmentation

    This paper proposes a new framework for colour texture segmentation and determines the contribution of colour and texture. The distributions of colour and texture features provides the discrimination between different colour textured regions in an image. The proposed method was tested using different mosaic and natural images. From the results, it is evident that the incorporation of colour information enhanced the colour texture segmentation and the developed framework is effective

    Extraction of epi-cardium contours from unseen images using a shape database

    Accurate segmentation of the myocardium in cardiac magnetic resonance images can be restricted by image noise and low discrimination between the epi-cardium boundary and other organs. Segmentation of the epi-cardium is important for the calculation of left ventricle mass. In this paper we propose a novel method of epi-cardium segmentation, which firstly segments the left ventricle cavity. The epi-cardium boundary is found using the edge information in the image, and where such information is lacking it enhances the shape with the best fitting scaled segment, taken from a database of expertly assisted hand segmented images. In the final stage the segments are connected using a natural closed spline. The method was evaluated using a leave-one-out strategy on 24 volumes and calculates the coefficient of determination as 0.93 and a root mean square of the point to curve error of 1.54 mm when compared to manually segmented images

    Unsupervised segmentation of mitochondria using model-based spectral clustering

    Segmentation of mitochondria in microscopic images represents a significant challenge that is motivated by the wide morphological and structural variations that are characteristic for this category of membrane enclosed sub cellular organelles. To address the drawbacks associated with manual mark-up procedures (which are common in current clinical evaluations), a recent direction of research investigate the application of statistical machine learning methods to mitochondria segmentation. Within this field of research the main issue was generated by the complexity of the training set that is able to describe the vast structural variation that is associated with mitochondria. To avoid this problem, in this paper we apply perceptual organization models such as Figure-Ground, Similarity, Proximity and Closure which target the identification of the closed membranes in EM images using multistage spectral clustering [1,2]. Our unsupervised mitochondria segmentation algorithm is outlined in Fig. 1. The first stage of the spectral clustering implements foreground segmentation with the similarity model S1 that aims to identify the dark contours that are given by the outer membrane of the mitochondrion. In the second stage, the foreground data is re-clustered with a different similarity model S2 to identify the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. The last stage involves a contour processing step that eliminates the pixels that are not consistent with the minimum distance between the inner and outer membranes of the mitochondrion. The algorithm has been tested on a suite of EM images provided by the American Society of Cell Biology and a number of experimental results are presented in Fig. 2

    Modern medical imaging modalities provide large amounts of information in both the spatial and temporal domains and the incorporation of this information in a coherent algorithmic framework is a significant challenge. In this paper, we present a novel and intuitive approach to combine 3-D spatial and temporal (3-D + time) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data in an integrated segmentation algorithm to extract the myocardium of the left ventricle. A novel level-set segmentation process is developed that simultaneously delineates and tracks the boundaries of the left ventricle muscle. By encoding prior knowledge about cardiac temporal evolution in a parametric framework, an expectation-maximization algorithm optimally tracks the myocardial deformation over the cardiac cycle. The expectation step deforms the level-set function while the maximization step updates the prior temporal model parameters to perform the segmentation in a nonrigid sense

    The use of 3D surface fitting for robust polyp detection and classification in CT colonography

    In this paper we describe the development of a computationally efficient computer-aided detection (CAD) algorithm based on the evaluation of the surface morphology that is employed for the detection of colonic polyps in computed tomography (CT) colonography. Initial polyp candidate voxels were detected using the surface normal intersection values. These candidate voxels were clustered using the normal direction, convexity test, region growing and Gaussian distribution. The local colonic surface was classified as polyp or fold using a feature normalized nearest neighborhood classifier. The main merit of this paper is the methodology applied to select the robust features derived from the colon surface that have a high discriminative power for polyp/fold classification. The devised polyp detection scheme entails a low computational overhead (typically takes 2.20 min per dataset) and shows 100% sensitivity for phantom polyps greater than 5 mm. It also shows 100% sensitivity for real polyps larger than 10 mm and 91.67% sensitivity for polyps between 5 to 10 mm with an average of 4.5 false positives per dataset. The experimental data indicates that the proposed CAD polyp detection scheme outperforms other techniques that identify the polyps using features that sample the colon surface curvature especially when applied to low-dose datasets

    Evaluation of local orientation for texture classification

    The aim of this paper is to present a study where we evaluate the optimal inclusion of the texture orientation in the classification process. In this paper the orientation for each pixel in the image is extracted using the partial derivatives of the Gaussian function and the main focus of our work is centred on the evaluation of the local dominant orientation (which is calculated by combining the magnitude and local orientation) on the classification results. While the dominant orientation of the texture depends strongly on the observation scale, in this paper we propose to evaluate the macro-texture by calculating the distribution of the dominant orientations for all pixels in the image that sample the texture at micro-level. The experimental results were conducted on standard texture databases and the results indicate that the dominant orientation calculated at micro-level is an appropriate measure for texture description

    Evaluation of 3D gradient filters for estimation of the surface orientation in CTC

    The extraction of the gradient information from 3D surfaces plays an important role for many applications including 3D graphics and medical imaging. The extraction of the 3D gradient information is performed by filtering the input data with high pass filters that are typically implemented using 3×3×3 masks. Since these filters extract the gradient information in small neighborhood, the estimated gradient information will be very sensitive to image noise. The development of a 3D gradient operator that is robust to image noise is particularly important since the medical datasets are characterized by a relatively low signal to noise ratio. The aim of this paper is to detail the implementation of an optimized 3D gradient operator that is applied to sample the local curvature of the colon wall in CT data and its influence on the overall performance of our CAD-CTC method. The developed 3D gradient operator has been applied to extract the local curvature of the colon wall in a large number CT datasets captured with different radiation doses and the experimental results are presented and discussed

    An adaptive noise removal approach for restoration of digital images corrupted by multimodal noise

    Data smoothing algorithms are commonly applied to reduce the level of noise and eliminate the weak textures contained in digital images. Anisotropic diffusion algorithms form a distinct category of noise removal approaches that implement the smoothing process locally in agreement with image features such as edges that are typically determined by applying diverse partial differential equation (PDE) models. While this approach is opportune since it allows the implementation of feature-preserving data smoothing strategies, the inclusion of the PDE models in the formulation of the data smoothing process compromises the performance of the anisotropic diffusion schemes when applied to data corrupted by non-Gaussian and multimodal image noise. In this paper we first evaluate the positive aspects related to the inclusion of a multi-scale edge detector based on the generalisation of the Di Zenzo operator into the formulation of the anisotropic diffusion process. Then, we introduce a new approach that embeds the vector median filtering into the discrete implementation of the anisotropic diffusion in order to improve the performance of the noise removal algorithm when applied to multimodal noise suppression. To evaluate the performance of the proposed data smoothing strategy, a large number of experiments on various types of digital images corrupted by multimodal noise were conducted.Keywords — Anisotropic diffusion, vector median filtering, feature preservation, multimodal noise, noise removal

    A vision-based system for inspecting painted slates

    Purpose – This paper describes the development of a novel automated vision system used to detect the visual defects on painted slates. Design/methodology/approach – The vision system that has been developed consists of two major components covering the opto-mechanical and algorithmical aspects of the system. The first component addresses issues including the mechanical implementation and interfacing the inspection system with the development of a fast image processing procedure able to identify visual defects present on the slate surface. Findings – The inspection system was developed on 400 slates to determine the threshold settings that give the best trade-off between no false positive triggers and correct defect identification. The developed system was tested on more than 300 fresh slates and the success rate for correct identification of acceptable and defective slates was 99.32 per cent for defect free slates based on 148 samples and 96.91 per cent for defective slates based on 162 samples. Practical implications – The experimental data indicates that automating the inspection of painted slates can be achieved and installation in a factory is a realistic target. Testing the devised inspection system in a factory-type environment was an important part of the development process as this enabled us to develop the mechanical system and the image processing algorithm able to perform slate inspection in an industrial environment. The overall performance of the system indicates that the proposed solution can be considered as a replacement for the existing manual inspection system. Originality/value – The development of a real-time automated system for inspecting painted slates proved to be a difficult task since the slate surface is dark coloured, glossy, has depth profile non-uniformities and is being transported at high speeds on a conveyor.
